Orangeville Banner Orangeville is willing to cede control over trash collection to the county — with a few conditions. Council recently passed a motion indicating the town is willing to transfer control of waste management to the upper-tier municipality so long as the county is willing to: cover the costs associated with addressing existing contracts with the town’s waste haulers; assume all the costs and liabilities for monitoring the closed landfill site at Rotary Park; and not change the amount and frequency of waste pickup in the first year after taking responsibility without support from Orangeville. Dufferin has sent letters to the eight lower-tier municipalities asking on what grounds they would be willing to hand full control of waste management to the county. The move is aimed at helping the county determine how much local trash it will be able to generate for its proposed energy-from-waste facility at the Dufferin Eco-Energy Park (DEEP), which is being developed with private firm Alter NRG Corporation. According to Orangeville’s planning director, James Stiver, transferring responsibility for garbage and yard waste collection to the county would take about $1.3 million in costs off the town’s budget. |
