Zero Waste Simcoe applauds proposals for Ontario's Waste Diversion Act PDF Print E-mail

The following news release has been issued by Zero Waste Simcoe:
The Provincial Environment Minister's recently released report on the role of waste diversion in the Green Economy represents a transformational statement on how Ontario will manage its waste. The document, relying heavily on the tenets of Zero Waste, describes a comprehensive and systemic approach to reducing the problems caused by our over-reliance on “garbage”.
Zero Waste Simcoe supports the Report’s proposals and looks forward to further discussions with the Ministry.
Highlights of the report include:
1) “…making individual producers fully responsible for waste diversion requirements.” (Page 16 of Report)
Clearly places the waste problem and the solution with the producer of the waste.
2) Defines diversion as “…materials recovered and preserved…” (Page 19 of Report)
Provides an improved metric for producers and municipalities to determine the effectiveness of their waste system choices.
3) Registers all producers (of waste) and waste management schemes and identifies consequences for non-compliance. (Page 26 of Report)
Gives universality and backbone to ensure all waste, including residential and Industrial, Commercial and Institutional wastes are managed.
“The Report lays out the framework against which all citizens, businesses and municipalities in Ontario will manage their waste” stated Gord McKay, Chair of Zero Waste Simcoe. “This is a document that we can work with”.
